Dis-regulated Parents Unregulated Children
The Impact of Trauma and Substance Abuse on Children and the Family
Assessment • Diagnosis • Treatment Options

Trauma and substance abuse can and do have profound and lasting effects on families.  Early abuse and neglect interferes with both neurological and psychosocial development. Furthermore, childhood experiences of abuse and neglect lead to serious life-long problems including difficulty forming relationships, depression, suicide, alcoholism, and drug abuse. They also contribute to major medical problems such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Understanding the mechanisms of influence is the first step in creating clinical and community opportunities for prevention and treatment.

Objectives: • Identify symptoms of trauma • Recognize the psychological impact of substance abuse on the family • Describe attachment theory and potential diagnosis for children who have been victims of neglect and trauma • Name community resources to assist in treatment plan development.
