Toni Heineman, DMH
Executive Director

Toni Heineman is a clinical psychologist who has been in private practice treating children, adults, and families in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years. She is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and was selected as a Fellow by Zero to Three for the 2003-2004 National Leadership Initiative. Toni has taught and supervised interns, graduate students and psychiatric residents and presented at numerous local and national professional meetings. She has authored a wide range of journal articles, a book, The Abused Child: Psychodynamic Understanding and Treatment; and is co-editor of another, Building A Home Within: Meeting the Emotional Needs of Children and Youth in Foster Care.

Avenne McBride, JD
Associate Director

Avenne McBride joined A Home Within after serving as the Director of Finance and Operations at the California Historical Society. Avenne holds a Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco and has practiced as a litigator in San Francisco before transitioning to a full-time commitment in the non-profit sector. She has served a number of new or evolving non-profit organizations with strategic and financial planning.

Wendy von Wiederhold, PhD
Local Chapters – Progam Director

Dr. von Wiederhold has been involved with A Home Within for the past fourteen years, first as a clinician, then as the Clinical Director of the San Francisco chapter and for the past three years as the Program Director, overseeing the local chapters and starting new chapters across the country. She is on the faculty at Access Institute and supervises pre- and post-doctoral trainees at the Wright Institute, California Pacific Medical Center, and the Institute on Ageing. Dr. von Wiederhold teaches Adolescent and Infant Development and is in private practice in San Francisco specializing in the psychodynamic treatment of adolescents, adults and couples.

Kendall Laidlaw
Developmental Director

Kendall Laidlaw serves as the Development Director at A Home Within, where she is responsible for marketing and fundraising direction and management. Prior, she served in a variety of marketing roles at Apple Computer, Inc. Kendall is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor degree in Ergonomics.

Danyelle Caruthers
Referral Coordinator

Danyelle Caruthers is currently attending San Francisco State University and will be graduating with a B.A. in Political Science in the spring of 2011. Danyelle comes to A Home Within with more than five years experience working with high risk youth and community based organizations. She has previously worked with Each One Reach One, a nonprofit organization that brings arts and educational programming to the incarcerated youth of San Francisco’s Juvenile Justice Center. She has also served as the Site Coordinator at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, implementing structured recreational and life skills programming for San Francisco youth and young adults. Danyelle has been volunteering in the community for over 12 years and has devoted her time and abilities to such causes as Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, Marin AIDS Project, Love Savers of Marin - Marriage Equality USA, and the Marin Colon Cancer Alliance. She also comes to us with experience in grant writing and presentation, and educational outreach at local high schools and treatments centers. Danyelle's plan is to continue to further her career in social justice and public policy through higher education and continued work within her community.

Michelle Koffler
Office Manager

Michelle Koffler is a recent graduate of the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She has worked for several non-profits in the bay area including Marin AIDS Project and Cultural Homestay International, as well as abroad with World Vision Australia. Her focus is on systems management and program development.

Betsy Snowden
Assistant to the Executive Director

Betsy Snowden is the Assistant to the Executive Director and Continuing Education Coordinator at A Home Within. She has assisted several San Francisco-based community development non-profits since her return from abroad. Betsy has extensive experience in youth and development in foreign cultures. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi from 2005-2007 she initiated several projects pertaining to youth education, empowerment and nutrition. Additionally, she founded Twitike Group, a democratically elected Community-Based Organization, incorporating local resources to address the need of close and safe water sources for a catchment area of eight villages. Betsy holds a BA in Marketing from Middle Tennessee State University, and plans to seek a Master’s Degree in International Relations within the next year. She intends to pursue an entrepreneurship in Youth Empowerment in Southeast Asia.

Amanda Herman
Fostering Art – Program Director

Amanda Herman is a San Francisco based artist and educator. She has a BFA from the University of New Mexico in Photography and Education and an MFA in Social Practice from the California College of the Arts. Amanda has lead community-based photography, writing and video programs for the last eight years. She was lead artist of youth projects for the California Council for the Humanities California Stories grant, and worked for four years as Project Director for the Sixth Street Photography Workshop, a photography program for homeless adults. Amanda has worked with the Fostering Art Program in a variety of roles since 2003.

Dan Stangl
Systems Manager

Dan Stangl came to A Home Within as an Americorps VISTA member in the summer of 2008. Since he joined the organization, he has worked on designing and implementing Salesforce as a new way of storing and tracking information about A Home Within's constituents. In addition, Dan has been helping out with the Fostering Art program, something he enjoys very much. Prior to this, he earned a degree in film at Emerson College in Boston.
