As we talked about marriage in 1978, my husband and I both agreed that we wanted to have birth children and adopt children from the foster care system. Having difficult starts ourselves, we thought that we could offer understanding, compassion, and unconditional commitment to a child or children who needed a family. And so we followed that path…
Married in 1979, we birthed two sons – one in 1980 and the second in 1986. We then began our foster/adoption journey in 1988. Thinking we would adopt a little girl between the boys’ ages, we instead met a 15-year-old boy who we immediately recognized as our son. Two years later we met our daughters (then 6 and 7) at another adoption matching event, and another two years after that our fourth son joined the family at 2 1/2 years of age.
Now grown, our children have all brought us a richness of life that we could never have imagined. Although the journey has had its ups and downs, we all agree that we wouldn’t want it any other way!
