This section starts with a focus on typical infant physical development—ages birth through 24 months. Next, we review the effects of trauma and stress on neurological processing and infant physical growth. Physical development does not stand alone and is deeply integrated with social, emotional, and cognitive development. A child who has cognitive deficits will likely have challenges in expressing emotions while a child with physical challenges is likely to experience social ramifications
Finally, we will discuss ways to promote physical development in each of the four areas of development: physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. We will introduce relationship based practices to trauma informed care in order to promote physical development in traumatized infants.
