This session addresses the core clinical stance of the series as it applies to foster youth. It contrasts a truth-seeking posture — pursuing “what really happened” — with a safety-seeking one, showing why pursuit predictably intensifies a foster youth's protective behavior and how consistent, Self-led safety allows it to relax. Grounded in Edery's (2019) article and developed through The U-Model™, the session teaches concrete, repeatable clinician moves that lower the stakes of disclosure and build the trust from which honest communication emerges over time, and it attends to the clinician's own reactive parts activated by deception in high-stakes foster care work.

This course is eligible for 2 continuing education credits.

This course is suitable for Psychologists, LMHCs, MFTs, Social Workers, LPCs, and Counselors.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Analyze and contrast a truth-seeking clinical stance with a safety-seeking stance and explain why pursuing honesty intensifies protective behavior in foster youth.

2. Identify the clinician's own reactive parts activated by a foster youth's deception and describe a Self-led regulation strategy.
