Chrissy
Okay, thank you again, Ren, so much for being here with me and participating in our little video volunteer feature project. You're one of our 300 new volunteers for our 30th anniversary, and we're so thrilled about it, and thank you so much for being part of that amazing number. Thank you.
Lauren
Yeah. I'm happy to be here.
Chrissy
Absolutely. Well, let me ask you on that topic, what brought you to A Home Within? Why did you decide to join?
Lauren
Yeah, so I've always been really passionate about social justice, and growing up I had multiple friends within the foster care community. I saw a lot of the trauma that was involved in their lives. So now as a therapist, I've been passionate about working with people who've been struggling with poverty, oppression, and trauma, so when I saw that A Home Within needed volunteers, it kind of felt like a perfect fit.
Chrissy
That's awesome, so great. I don't have many people that I hear from that have had a lot of friends in the foster care system. A lot of people have had professional experience with kids in foster care, and we have some [volunteers] who were in foster care themselves. But it's interesting to hear the different connections that all of our volunteers have to foster care.
Lauren
Yeah, I grew up in Brooklyn, and you know I went to public school. So it kind of feels like a natural product of that.
Chrissy
Yeah, totally. I'm sure the location has a lot to do with it as well. Great. So what would you say, if you knew someone who was considering volunteering with A Home Within, what might you say to them?
Lauren
I would tell them that I feel really welcomed and supported here. Everyone here has had great communication with me, answering questions, and telling me they're here for me if I needed anything, and that's without even mentioning the continuing education credits and stuff like that. They've been really responsive to me and figuring out a good clinical consultation group. So everyone's been really welcoming and warm and clinically impressive as well.
Chrissy
Wow! I'm so glad to hear that, that makes me so happy that you've had that experience getting started. That's wonderful. Well, what do you think people who aren't very familiar with A Home Within would find most surprising about the work that we do?
Lauren
I think the most surprising thing is kind of the commitment to access – to making mental health care accessible to people throughout their whole lifetime, not just when they're young. It seems like the organization has a really good understanding about how early experiences can continue to affect people into adulthood and making that care continuously accessible can really have a positive impact on people's lives.
Chrissy
Absolutely. You sort of hit the nail on the head – the whole mission of A Home Within is providing that continuous lifelong care. I see all the time people asking, “Well, why are you doing this? Because foster kids are eligible for therapy just being in foster care.” But so much of it is, you know, therapists with less training or shorter term therapy, or they have to bounce around if they move, or things like that. So I'm glad that the mission kind of clicked with you. That's great.
Lauren
Chrissy
So kind of in that vein, what do you think is the most special part about A Home Within to you?
Lauren
I think working with clinicians who really care to try to make the world a better place and to expand access to mental health care. I became a therapist because I cared about those things, so I really like being able to meet and work with people who share the same goals and values that I do.
Chrissy
Great. I’m glad you're finding that at A Home Within. And I'm curious, outside of your volunteer work with A Home Within what are some other accomplishments or projects that you're involved in that make you feel most proud or most excited?
Lauren
In 2021, I opened a private practice, and now it's a group private practice. So I've expanded a lot and we specialize and work with sexual and gender minority groups. So it's been really rewarding work. We work with LGBTQ folks, polyamorous folks, people in the community and sex workers. It's been a big passion project of mine, and it allows me to offer services to people who normally avoid therapy because they're worried about being judged or being misunderstood. So it's been really amazing for me to get to do.
Chrissy
That's so great. That's so nice to have that very niche sort of specialty, where you can make someone feel very welcomed and supported just by the whole practice. That's awesome.
Lauren
Yeah, it has made me really happy.
Chrissy
I bet, that's great. Well, we made it through our questions! Before I close out and let you get back to your I'm sure very busy day, is there anything else that you wanted to say or leave us with or anything before we end?
Lauren
I don't think too much! I appreciate you doing this; I appreciate all the work that you guys do, and I think that's it.
Chrissy
Great sounds good. Well, thank you, Ron, it was such a pleasure to get to. I think I saw you at the volunteer orientation?
Lauren
Chrissy
It's nice to have a little more one on one time and get to know you a bit more. So thanks so much for participating.
Lauren
Chrissy
Alright! We'll connect again soon. Thanks, Ren.
Lauren
