Mackenzie Strong, MHC-LP, joined A Home Within as a volunteer therapist in 2023 and has been donating her time to her client since October of that year.
My work with A Home Within has solidified that this is the field I want to be in.

What is a fun fact about you?
Mackenzie: My favorite activity is making ceramics at my city’s community arts center. Whenever I see a handmade piece, I want to learn more about how the artist made it.
Why did you decide to join A Home Within?
Mackenzie: I first learned about A Home Within (AHW) from my supervisor during my Mental Health Counseling graduate work. My supervisor encouraged me to learn more about this organization and apply to volunteer if it felt like a good fit. I immediately felt aligned with and inspired by AHW's mission. That feeling has sustained and grown during the year I have been involved, and I plan to stay involved throughout my career.
Growing up as an adopted child within a family of adopted children, I was always aware of the unique familial circumstances and structures that many people experience. I have a passion for working with children and adult children who have experienced adversity in an area of life that is formative and vulnerable. It is a tenant of my values to be involved in building a larger community that is inclusive and curious about the ways of meeting the needs of others. One way I can serve that value is by working on an individual level through my involvement in AHW.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering with A Home Within?
Mackenzie: If someone is already considering working with AHW, they likely have the qualities that would make their involvement beneficial to the community of AHW. I think the way AHW benefits the individual volunteering is as infinite as it could be for the individual receiving services. Because the services and community of AHW utilize a digital platform for connection, they do not have some of the same barriers that physical spaces possess. There are opportunities for learning through frequent online workshops and seminars held by professionals in the mental health services field; there are regionally specific networks for professional discussion and support; and the team of AHW staff is readily available to field questions and offer support.
How has your work with A Home Within impacted you personally, professionally, or otherwise?
Mackenzie: My work with A Home Within has solidified that this is the field I want to be in. It is a well-supported community of healthcare providers who have come together to serve an important population, build a professional community, and provide learning opportunities. In these uncertain times, involvement in community efforts is essential.
Thank you, Mackenzie, for the support and consistency you continue to offer your client at A Home Within!
