What's a fun fact about you?

Sarah: After I finished graduate school, I picked up and moved to Maui with no job or real place to live. After 6 years of hard school, internships and work I just needed a break. While in Maui, I didn't work at all in the therapy world instead taking that time to work in hospitality. This was one of the best things I did for myself rather than just jumping right into my career.

Why did you decide to join A Home Within?

Sarah: Early on in my career I worked at a shelter for "homeless" teens. These kiddos were unhoused for many reasons, some including being foster children. I have the privilege of having some capacity to give back in my career and would love to help people who may have come through the foster care system which doesn't always provide great transitional services or lasting services to help these kiddos transition into adults.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering with A Home Within?

Sarah: I would encourage any therapist to work for A Home Within. I think it is such a great opportunity to give back to the community. Foster children and former foster children often do not have the connections and support systems as they transition into adulthood and being a positive support system is such an amazing opportunity.

What do you think would surprise people most about the work A Home Within does?

Sarah: I think the most surprising thing about working with A Home Within is the services and stability that they provide to foster youth and former foster youth. It might surprise someone who hasn't worked in any impoverished community or with foster children how little services they get once they turn 18. A Home Within helps to bridge the transition between foster childhood and adulthood.
