Selena: I have traveled to 15 countries and 26 of the United States, plus Washington DC.

What's your favorite part about volunteering with A Home Within?

Selena: My favorite part about volunteering with A Home Within is knowing with certainty that I am contributing towards humanity in meaningful, specific, actionable ways.

Why did you decide to join A Home Within?

Selena: I decided to join A Home Within after hearing the concept of "one session for as long as it takes". In my professional tenure, I've frequently seen the challenges clients face in maintaining access to care including changing or losing insurance, moving, or having payors determine they were no longer providing additional sessions. I also know losing access to mental health care can cause big risks such as declining in progress or not having it when you need it the most.

How has your work with A Home Within impacted you personally, professionally, or otherwise?

Selena: I began working with my client within the first few months of transitioning from working for agencies to launching my own private practice. I was just learning how to do scheduling and paperwork separate from larger clearinghouses so setting up my practice to be able to accept my A Home Within client really paved the way for me to launch my practice independently. It was so much easier to start than I had imagined that I realized some aspects could be just as simple for all new clients moving forward! It really motivated me to put myself out there as a therapist and build my practice.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering with A Home Within?

Selena: I encourage my fellow clinicians to join me in volunteering for A Home Within because it's a cost-effective way to contribute by participating in real-time solutions. Each week I am giving in ways money alone can't quantify, through services and relationships that expand beyond my trade and into fulfilling my purpose.

What do you think would surprise people most about the work A Home Within does?

Selena: I was surprised when I realized how long A Home Within has been doing this work. It reminds me that my desire to serve joins me to decades of others who have also answered this calling. I'm amazed by the small team at the helm and their dedication to trauma-informed care.
